Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine
that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to read.
This week I can't wait for:
Flux Books
Where young adult is a point of view and not a reading level.
Flux books describes themselves as "consistently provocative, independently alternative, and always striving to find unique voices that unsettle, surprise, inform, and ignite." They also have published several very well known YA authors, including Maggie Stiefvater, Simone Elkeles and A.S. King.

As I reviewed my first Flux book on my blog this week Some Quiet Place, I wanted to take a look at some of their upcoming releases, and these are two that looked interesting. I can't say I'm excited about either of these covers, but the descriptions I like.
by Whitney A. Miller
March 8th 2014
I've seen this described as "starring a girl consumed by visions of a violent, blood-soaked alternate reality." I am vary wary of alternate realities/parallel worlds. But this one actually intrigues me.
The voice inside me is breaking free. I can't stop her.
Harlow Wintergreen, daughter of the leader of a powerful religious organization called VisionCrest, has a dark and dangerous secret. She hears a voice in her head that seems to have a mind of its own, plaguing her with visions of a violent and bloody alternate reality. And even worse, Harlow fears that this terrifying voice could take control of her.
Traveling with the VisionCrest elite on a PR expedition through Asia, Harlow struggles to keep her mind under control. But the more she resists, the more her mental state deteriorates, making her visions bleed into reality. When people start dying, Harlow must expose her secret to the boy she loves and face the monster within her . . . or else be consumed by it.

I've seen this book described as "Arthurian steampunk," though I'm not sure the cover is saying that at all.
By day, Vivienne is Guinevere's lady-in-waiting. By night, she's Merlin's secret apprentice, indulging in the new mechanical arts and science of alchemy. It's a preferred distraction from Camelot’s gossipy nobility, roguish knights, and Lancelot’s athletic new squire, Marcus, who will follow in all knights’ footsteps by taking a rather inconvenient vow of chastity.
More than anything, Vivienne longs to escape Camelot for a future that wouldn't include needlework or marriage to a boorish lord or dandy. But when King Arthur's sorceress sister, Morgan le Fay, threatens Camelot, Vivienne must stay to help Merlin build a steam-powered weapon to defeat the dark magic machine Morgan will set upon the castle. Because if Camelot falls, Morgan would be that much closer to finding the elusive Holy Grail. Time is running out and Morgan draws near, and if Vivienne doesn't have Merlin's weapon ready soon, lives would pay the price, including that of Marcus, the only one fast enough to activate it on the battlefield.

Are you waiting on anything specific from this publisher?
Ooh-Camelot Burning sounds so good! I've had mixed experiences with the Camelot retellings I've read but since this one will prominently feature Merlin (my fave) I'm hopeful I'll like it. Thanks for introducing me to two cool sounding reads!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of either of these, surprisingly, but I'm curious about them both now. I'll be looking into them for sure! (Especially Camelot Burning because YES to Arthurian legends!)
ReplyDeleteParallel worlds seems to be the hot topic nowadays, though I don't usually love it. I"m definitely intrigued by the Camelot story, too.
ReplyDeleteCamelot Burning sounds interesting. Arthurian novels are hit and miss with me (more often miss), but I can't keep from reading them anyway. This will be no different.
ReplyDeleteInteresting picks. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!

I've come across a few parallel worlds type, but it's not my favourite type either, but it does sound really good. Definitely keeping an eye on that one, and I'm sold on anything Arthurian. Great picks! :)

I find your choices interesting since I wouldn't have chosen them myself. I have had trouble with Flux's titels lately and I have not seen great reviews for Insomnia and neither for The Truth About You and Me which I actually got for review, but never read since the reviews I had seen were so mediocre. I hope that these two will rock your world though ;)
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of either one of these, but both of them sound so good. Great picks! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteBoth these books have really intriguing premises. I agree about the first cover though. Superimposing a face over a lot of orange for a book called the Violet Hour: not a choice I would make.
ReplyDeleteArthurian steam punk sounds kind of cool.
