Of Beast and Beauty
by Stacey Jay
Delacorte Press, July 23, 2013
In the beginning was the darkness, and in the darkness was a girl, and in the girl was a secret...
In the domed city of Yuan, the blind Princess Isra, a Smooth Skin, is raised to be a human sacrifice whose death will ensure her city’s vitality. In the desert outside Yuan, Gem, a mutant beast, fights to save his people, the Monstrous, from starvation. Neither dreams that together, they could return balance to both their worlds.
Isra wants to help the city’s Banished people, second-class citizens despised for possessing Monstrous traits. But after she enlists the aid of her prisoner, Gem, who has been captured while trying to steal Yuan’s enchanted roses, she begins to care for him, and to question everything she has been brought up to believe.
As secrets are revealed and Isra’s sight, which vanished during her childhood, returned, Isra will have to choose between duty to her people and the beast she has come to love. (From Goodreads)

Recently, I've been obsessed with Beauty and the Beast retellings. In fact just finished Beauty by Robin McKinley. I think this all stems from the fact that my daughter has been really into Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and has been listening to the soundtrack and begging for the movie non stop. But it's quickly becoming one of my favorite fairy tales.
BONUS: Another upcoming Beauty and the Beast adaptation I'm DYING to read:

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?
There's quite a few fairy-tale retellings coming up! I'm really excited. :D
ReplyDeleteLOVING all of the Beauty & the Beast retellings lately. I think I'm more excited about Cruel Beauty, but both are on my TBR. Glad I'm not the only one with Disney's version stuck on repeat in my house. My 5yo daughter watches it incessantly. :)
ReplyDeleteBoth of these Beast and Beauty re-tellings sound so good. And both have such great covers. I can't wait to read both of them. Great picks!
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower via Bloglovin and GFC. I'd love it if you'd follow back. :)

Yay for Beauty and the Beast retellings! This was my WoW a few weeks ago. I've since read an interview of Stacey Jay and it sounds like she's got some really interesting ideas for this, like flipping around certain tropes associated with beauty and beastliness. I can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteEver since Heart's Blood, Beauty and the Beast has become one of my favorites and this sounds SO promising! I do hope it lives up to all our expectations! Great pick, Lauren! :)
ReplyDeleteOoh I'm SO excited for this too! I had it on my TBR, but I definitely did not have Cruel Beauty, thank you for spotlighting that; I really want to read that now. Awesome WoW picks! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for Of Beast & Beauty. I have mine preordered already and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I love Stacey Jay so it is an autobuy for me no matter what but I know she is really proud of this one.
